In order to be awarded the IB-diploma the student must sit exams in 6 subjects chosen from 6 different groups. There are 2 levels: Higher Level (HL) with 5 lessons per week, and Standard Level (SL) with 3 lessons per week. The student must choose 3 subjects on HL and 3 subjects on SL.

Besides, all students have to take a course in Theory of Knowledge (TOK) in which there is no exam, but they must write a paper and make an oral presentation for assessment.

They also have to write an Extended Essay for which they may be awarded bonus points. The main part of the research for this essay must be carried out in the summer holidays between 1st and 2nd IB. On top of all this they have to carry out 150 hours' CAS-activities over the two years. CAS = Creativity, Action, Service.
